Mental toughness

Mental toughness is a collection of attributes that allows a person to persevere through thick and thin, AGAINST ALL ODDS.

Scientific research, within the past ten years, has attempted a formal definition of mental toughness as a PSYCHOLOGICAL CONSTRUCT.  A mentally-tough person has these two qualities—-SACRIFICE and SELF-DENIAL.  These qualities are combined with a PERFECTLY DISCIPLINED WILL that refuses to give in.  It is a state of mind—-CHARACTER IN ACTION.  Mental toughness is about improving the mind, so that it is ALWAYS on your side, NOT sometimes helping you, NOR working against you, as we know it is capable of doing.

There are debates about whether mental toughness is primarily a DEVELOPED CHARACTERISTIC or has a GENETIC BASIS.  Foundational processes occur during development that allow a person to build mental toughness throughout life.  Mental toughness can be developed.  It has been equated with better understood constructs from psychology such as RESILIENCE and HARDINESS.  Resilience is a POSITIVE PROCESS OF COPING WITH STRESS AND PAIN.  Hardiness is a PERSONALITY TRAIT, GENERALLY SEEN AS STABLE THROUGHOUT THE LIFETIME.  Therefore, BE A DIFFERENCE-MAKER.  Step up and have a peak performance WHEN IT MATTERS MOST.  Take control of NEGATIVE SELF-TALK.  Always maintain POISE and COMPOSURE.  Look at failure as stepping-stones for future achievements.

(7) It is by attempting to reach the top in a single leap, that so much misery is caused in the world—-Cobbett.

(8)  High seats are never but uneasy, and crowns are always stuffed with thorns—-Brooks.

(9) Fling away ambition.  By that sin angels fell.  How then can man, the image of his Maker, hope to win by it ?—-Shakespeare.

(10) The tallest trees are most in the power of the winds and ambitious men of the blasts of fortune—-Penn.

(11) Ambition makes the same mistake concerning power, that avarice makes as to wealth.  She begins by accumulating it as a means to happiness and finishes by continuing to accumulate it as an end.—-Colton.

(12) Ambition is not a weakness, unless it be disproportionate to the capacity.  To have more ambition than ability is to be at once weak and unhappy.

The testing of steel

In the test room of a steel mill, are little partitions and compartments.  Steel is tested to the limit, and marked with figures that show its BREAKING-POINT.

Some pieces have been twisted until they broke, and the strength of torsion is marked on them.  Some have been compressed to the CRUSHING-POINT, and they are also marked.  The owner of the steel mill, who is familiar with what has to be done with the steel knows just what these pieces of steel will stand under strain.  He knows what they would bear if placed in a great ship, building or bridge.  He knows this because his testing-room has revealed these facts to him.  Thus, it is with us, human beings.

God does not want us to be like vases of glass or porcelain.  He wants us to be like the toughened pieces of steel, able to bear TWISTING and CRUSHING to the uttermost WITHOUT COLLAPSING.  He wants us to be not hothouse-plants, but STORM-BEATEN OAKS; not sand-dunes driven with every gust of wind, but GRANITE ROCKS withstanding the fiercest storms.  To make us such, He brings us into the testing-room of suffering.  Many of us need no other argument than our own experiences to prove that suffering is indeed GOD’S TESTING-ROOM OF FAITH.

Like Macduff let us say : “Better the storm with God than smooth waters without Him”.  Furthermore, GREAT THINGS AE DONE WHEN MEN AND MOUNTAINS MEET, THESE ARE NOT DONE BY JOSTLING IN THE STREETS.–

The five vices to be shunned…

The five forms of violence come from five vices.

(1) LUST—which destroys all purity and power in the soul.  People lust for money and power.  It is an addictive and obsessive desire to seek happiness and self-worth by indulging in things that destroy the inner powers and dignity of the soul.  All clarity, sensitivity, love and truth is destroyed.

(2)  ANGER— is a fire that burns oneself and others around.  It is like acid that eats away at the soul.  It blunts our discernment and make us react irrationally.  Anger leads to destructive behaviour.  Anger is active sadness.

(3) GREED—makes a person poor and empty inside, as he is always chasing desires.  Greed lads to corrupt practices.  A greedy person is never satisfied and always wants more and that can lead to an imbalance and exploitation of man and nature.

(4) ATTACHMENT—is the root of all suffering.  It comes from a need to feel supported.  Attachment keeps one entangled in the web of MINE and so it makes a person selfish, petty, narrow-minded.

(5) EGO—is the subtlest enemy of the soul.  An egoist is totally disconnected from self-respect.  An egoistic person is always insecure and seeks attention.  He is in delusion and is influenced by praise and defamation.  Thus the soul violates its true nature of PEACE, JOY, LOVE and POWER.

The time to sing…

time to sing

Last night I heard a robin singing in the rain

And the raindrop’s patter made a sweet refrain

Making all the sweeter the music of the strain.

So, I thought, when trouble comes, as trouble will,

Why should I stop singing ? Just beyond the hill

It may be that sunshine floods the green world still.

He who faces the trouble with a heart of cheer

Makes the burden lighter.

If there falls a tear,

Sweeter is the cadence in the song we hear.

I have learned your lesson, bird with dappled wing

Listening to your music with its lilt of spring

When the storm-cloud darkens, THEN’S THE TIME TO SING.

If the clouds be full of rain, they empty themselves upon the earth.  Why do we dread the clouds which now darken our sky?  For a while, they hide the sun, but the sun is not quenched, it will be out soon.  Meanwhile, those black clouds are filled with rain, and the blacker they are, the more likely there will be heavy showers.  We cannot have rain without clouds.  Our troubles have always brought blessings along. Let us not worry about the clouds, but sing because May flowers are brought to us through the April cloud and showers.

What seems so dark to thy dim sight

May be a shadow, SEEN ALRIGHT

Making some brightness doubly bright

The flash that struck thy tree—-no more to shelter thee—-let’s heaven’s blue floor

Shine where it never shone before

The cry wrung from thy spirit’s pain

May echo on some far-off plain

And guide a wanderer home again.

Happiness and peace in life…

Swami Paramarthanandji was once asked : ” Is there a simple, straightforward road-map to get happiness and peace in life ?”

This was what he said :

Happiness is a state of mind; it does not come from possessions.  We waste our entire life in the pursuit of desirable objects, which keep changing and so also our goal posts.  If a person has a mansion, with plenty of bedrooms and bathrooms—-he is busy in maintaining them.  So, he SERVES THE HOUSE.

Relationships should make us happy.  They have to be nurtured and when the person with whom we are involved does not reciprocate, we feel sad.  Every POSSESSION and RELATIONSHIP creates OBLIGATORY DUTIES. So optional duties also become obligatory.

To keep maintaining POSSESSIONS, RELATIONSHIPS and performing DUTIES exhausts us.  How can fatigue bring happiness ?

Therefore, STRIKE A BALANCE and discriminate between what is necessary and what is unnecessary.  Thus reducing POSSESSIONS, OBLIGATORY DUTIES, RELATIONSHIPS and TRANSACTIONS leads the way to the PORT OF CALL FOR HAPPINESS.
