The OLINGUITO, is a raccoon with a teddy-bear face that is so cute that it is hard to resist, let alone overlook.  But Science did—-until now.  It belongs to a grouping of large creatures that include dogs, cats and bears (mammals).  They are found in the forests of Ecuador and Columbia.  One of them lived in the SMITHSONIAN-run National Zoo in Washington for a year.  Truly a case of mistaken identity.  The little critter, named RINGERL, was mistaken for a sister species, the OLINGO.  Ringerl was shipped from zoo to zoo in the U.S. from 1967 to 1976 to try to get it to breed with other OLINGOS.  It would not.  She just was not the right species and not fussy, as though.
